Iodine in water solutions is usually colored strong enough so that its presence can be detected visually. However, close to the end point, when the iodine concentration is very low, its yellowish color is very pale and can be easily overlooked. Thus for the end point detection starch solutions are used.

Starch, when mixed properly with iodine, results in a dark blue-black colouring. The iodine must first be mixed with iodide (extracted from potassium iodide) to create triiodide. The triiodide is added to water, and the solution is mixed with starch, which then produces the dark colouration.
The reason behind the change in colour is unknown, but scientists suspect that iodine gets clogged in coils of a soluble starch called "beta amylose".
