ALWAYS 30:2 (Compressions:Breaths)
there is no ratio with just one breath it's always 30:2
The ratio is 30/2 or 30 chest compressions to 2 rescue breaths at a rate of 100-120 chest compressions per minute.
This ratio is what the "experts" have determined to be the best combination all things considered. I have been teaching CPR since the 1970's and every time new guidelines come out it always changes; either the choking or CPR or both. Obviously this is still evolving and will change as the medical professionals learn more about the human body and responders actions, both HCP and the lay person.
Some classes say that you no longer need the two breaths and that chest compressions alone are fine (you should still check the airway and with a rescue breath in the beginning), but the idea is that the two breaths ensure that oxygen gets in the lungs, and the chest compressions pump the oxygen-filled blood cells through the body.
Give 2 breaths to oxygenate the blood and 30 compressions to circulate the blood.
Ideally, 50. Chest compressions should be done at a rate of 100/min.
