A lot of chemical reaction only take place when a certain activation energy is reached. This is the kind of energy you need to start a reaction. In many cases this activation energy might mean that a chemical in our bodies would have to be above the temperature that would kill us just to take place!

A way around this problem is the enzyme, which can lower the activation energy by using something called an active site, which exists on the enzyme itself. Normally it takes energy to break bonds and split chemicals-up, or split molecules. This is where the enzyme comes in: the active site links with the molecule of the chemical you want to split, and it allows it to split-up.

Its worth noting that enzymes break-down above a certain temperature (we say they denature), which is why the body really works hard to keep your core temperature down.
