A:

In this context, 'holy' means living according to a strict or highly moral religious or spiritual system. Being holy is not the only path to what might be called righteousness, but it is a path well trodden and presumably many find their goal in life along this path. Apart from providing easily learnt concepts of moral behaviour, holiness can provide a sense of personal achievement for some.

.

Catholic AnswerAs the Catechism teaches us, there is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle ((Cf. 2 Tim 4) Spiritual progress entails the ascesis and mortification that gradually lead to living the peace and joy of the Beatitudes (CCC 2015) St. Peter in his first letter addresses this, see 1 Peter 13-16 (quoting Leviticus "You shall be holy, for I am holy.", since God is holy (He is called holy as completely separated from all evil), we are called to be holy: to be separated that which is profane and dedicated entirely to God. This is the END for which we were created, we were only created and put on this earth to choose God, and to live for him. Thus, this is the "good" for which we were intended. Any life outside this intended good is completely and utterly meaningless and results in our eternal damnation. Thus to be holy is to be separated from all that is evil and on the narrow, difficult path to God.

from Modern Catholic Dictionary by John A. Hardon, S.J. Doubleday & Co., Inc. Garden City, NY 1980

Holiness in the Old Testament meant being separated from the secular or profane, or dedication to God's service - thus Israel was said to be holy because it was the people of God. Holiness in creatures is either subjective or objective or both. It is subjective essentially by the possession of divine grace and morally by the practice of virtue. Objective holiness in creatures denote their exclusive consecration to the service of God . . .
