The point of political parties is to give an overview of their issues so in a large country you don't have to personally know every candidate but rather you can look at their party to get a general overview of their positions. It is good to compare political parties to match your beliefs to so you know which candidates would be better to vote for. For example, if (all these examples are from the US) if you believe in less taxes and a stronger national defense, you might want to vote for the Republican party, if you believe in civil liberties and more government programs you might want to vote for the Democrat party, if you believe in civil liberties, less taxes and less government control, you might vote for the Libertarian Party, and if you believe that the main issue that governments should be concerned with is environmental protection and consumer protection, you might vote for the Green party.
