Snakes are not indigenous to Hawaii, therefore there are no natural predators to keep population(s) in check. Without this vital step in the food chain, the snake population would grow uncontrollably. Snakes are predators, also. Uncontrolled population growth would result in the decimation, if not extinction of local species.
Search "brown tree snake Guam" and "python everglades" to see the effect of the introduction of non native snakes into ecosystems with no natural population control.
There are some animals that do not exist in Hawaii- snakes among them. There are no predators that would kill snakes, so they would multiply, and destroy the birds that are there now. This has already happened in Guam, and Hawaii does not want a repeat.
Zero- and we would really like to keep it that way. There are no snakes in Hawaii, and it is highly illegal to bring snakes to Hawaii.
Alaska has but one species of snake, the common garter snake. It was thought that Hawaii had no snakes but, in recent times, snakes have been spotted and are of a concern. It is illegal to have a pet snake in that state and illegal to import them. The snakes seen were probably smuggled into the state and released or they came in on freight shipments from elsewhere. All other states have a variety of snakes. The Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake is found in the waters surrounding Hawaii, however.
Hawaii: Snakes are illegal in Hawaii and anyone spotting a snake should not try to handle it. Snakes have no natural predators in Hawaii and pose a serious threat to Hawaii's environment. Many snake species also prey on birds and their eggs, increasing the threat to endangered native birds. Large snakes can also be a danger to the public and small pets.
Until recently snakes had not found their way to the islands (it is illegal to bring them) but some reports indicate that some snakes have been seen, among them the brown tree snake. This is especially bad because snakes have no effective predators living on Hawaii and would quickly kill all the native birds and animals. A good example where this happened is the island Guam where snakes have virtually wiped out the native forest birds. Accordingly, it’s a class C felony to possess or transport snakes in Hawaii. Violators risk a $200,000 fine and up to three years in prison, but the state has still collected or confiscated roughly 100 snakes since 2000. Since many in Hawaii have never even seen a snake, they are especially captivating on the black market, where snakes often arrive in shipping packages or hidden in luggage.
Hawaii has no snakes, except for pets.
