That's the idea, but in most cases it's the record producing company getting 75 to 95% of the profits on music sales. Each artist gets a very small (miniscule) amount from each sale. It's illegal because there is a such thing as copyright law: if you make a new work of art (music, book, picture, painting) it's yours to do with what you want. You can trash it, sell it, show it in your windows, lease/license it (allows someone else specific AND ONLY those specific rights.) You can decide only 4 people can see it for 2 minutes on every 14th Wed in odd years in Bangladesh, while wearing only Dashikis.

If we as a society will not honor the right of ownership by the artist there will be far less content available and that will be derivative i.e. nothing new. My painting is mine and you (whoever) have no right to sell postcards or tshirts with my painting on it without permission; whether you make money from it or not - IT'S MINE! Like someone's name "I'm Mel Gibson** and I can paint that car for $18.99" We all know that using someone else's name (without permissions) to sell something is wrong, why is it so hard to accept that using their art (music, book etc) is just as wrong?

lets answer you with this.. lets say you wrote a song and it became a top hit you would be making money hand over fist the more of the song you sold the more money you got. Now someone takes it and you get nothing .get ti!

Because you are "stealing" or "using without authorization" someone else's intellectual 'work product.' What you are steealing has value - it is the means by which they earn their income and livelihood.
