It is not true that it is important for Christians to believe that Jesus (peace be upon him) is son of God. All Christians in time of Jesus life; and before the Roman Empire switched to Christianity belief; were believing that Jesus is a prophet supported by God; the Creator; miracles. All of them believed that God is one and only one God with no partner, no companion, no son, no father, no associate and no equivalence.
Qur'an; Muslim's God holy book; says (English meaning translation):
"Say, "He is Allah (or God and same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism), [who is] One, (1) Allah, the Eternal Refuge. (2) He neither begets nor is born, (3) Nor is there to Him any equivalent."(Qur'an, 112:1-4)
and says:
"They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers" (5:72)
and says:
"They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three (the Trinity)." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded. " (5:73-75)
Christian answer:
From a Christian point of veiw it is very important to believe that Jesus is the son of God. For being the son of God (or God as man) Jesus was able to be the "lamb of God" that is the perfect sacrifice for sin. If Jesus isn't the son of God then his death was not an atoning sacrifice. This is a basic belief of Christianity.
Jesus' 12 disciples certainly recognised Him as the son of God:
John 6:69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Demons know He is the son of God:
Luke 4:41 And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
1Jn_5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
There is no agreement between all Christians on this topic:
Because religious people will believe any damn-fool thing.

No, most Christians (Protestants are Christians also) believe in one God in Three Persons. God the Father, God the Son, (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit. Each Person is God, which makes up the one true God, but each one has a different "job" or ministry to perform.
