First, when you are not a doctor, you could not jugde the gravity of the incident. And

To debrief helps the doctor to understand the circumstances, and to adapt the treatement. It can help you understand if your reactions were accurate when you give the first aid.

Concerning the first aid, just keep in mind : you are not a doctor !

Your aim is to call for medical assistance and to maintain the victim is the best state possible until it arrives.

The objective of first aid is to provide basic prehospital treatment prior to the arrival of the ambulance or medical service.

Once a more qualified person arrives (doctor, nurse or ambulance officer) you should do a handover and brief the more qualified professional on what you have done so far.

When doing a handover, state the time of onset of the injury, the name of the patient, approximate age, any known medical conditions or Allergies, if they are currently on medication, the history of the incident, the mechanism of injury, any changes since you arrived, vital signs (pulse, respiration, Glasgow Coma Scale, Blood Pressure), any treatment you have given (medication, first aid interventions etc), the next of kin of the patient and any other relevant information the medical professional may ask for.

So, to summarise, it is fundamental to report details of what you have done to a medical professional so they can carry on what you started. The handover process is a cycle. Once the ambulance officers get to the hospital, they will have to do a handover to the triage nurse/doctor. The doctor-on-duty will then have to do another handover to the specialist (surgeon etc).
