Why is it necessary for us to know that we are created in the image and likeness of God?

In the first biblical creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), man is made directly in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). However Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis) says that we must scrupulously avoid reading into the second creation story (Genesis 2:4b-20) any facts or notions taken from the first, and vice versa. Thus, in reading about the origin of man in the story of the Garden of Eden, he says that we must not say or even think that man is here created in God's image.
Thus we have two quite independent biblical stories of the creation of man, only one of which says that we are created in the image and likeness of God. Nevertheless, it helps us to understand the dignity of man if we look to the first story and read from this that we are created in the image and likeness of God.

However, there are greater meanings implied, since man was made to be far superior to all other creatures, having Godlike qualities, even being able to have "dominion," or rule, over all other creatures.
