How do you deal with the liquid mercury scattered in laboratory?

Set up a vacuum flask with flexible intake tubing long enough to reach the mercury spill. Use glass tubing on the inside of the flask to reach nearly to the bottom on the intake side. On the other side (the side connected to the vacuum source) make sure the glass tubing reaches just inside the flask, near the top, so that the mercury entering the flask will not simply be sucked into the vacuum source lines. Use a two-holed rubber stopper to accomplish all this. This will give you a mercury vacuum cleaner, so to speak. Use a regulator and be careful to use just enogh vacuum to lift the mercury into the flask.

What is a Hirsch Funnel and how are they used?

They are used for vacuum filtration to separate crystals, or solids, from a liquid. Usually a neoprene adapter is used to fit the funnel to a flask that is attached to some sort of vacuum. A filter paper is used to make sure no solids get through, or clog, the funnel. Typically, it is advised, that hot solutions are not used in vacuum filtration because the reduced pressure will cause solvents to evaporate, and the solid will precipitate out; causing the funnel, and pores of the filter paper, to clog.

What method will we use to get a pure liquid if it has dissolved impurities present in it?

Why is vacuum filtration faster than gravity filtration?

Vacuum filtration is used instead of gravity filtration in order to achieve a dryer product in less time. The faster process of vacuum filtration allows the slurry to remain cold and in cases such as with benzoic acid more crytals will remain formed at colder temperatures. Gravity filtration is most useful when the solid is to be discarded and the filtrate (the liquid that flows through the filter paper) kept. Vacuum filtration is often faster than gravity filtration and is most useful if the solid must be kept or if a filtration must be done rapidly. A vacuum from an aspirator or a vacuum pump is used to pull the liquid through a funnel containing a piece of filter paper, while the solid is left on the paper.

Why do the RPMs fluctuate on their own without hitting the accelerator?

I am having a similar problem with my 95' w/351. Mine fluctuates by about 300 rpm's and is fairly consistant every 3-5 seconds. I've been told that it is a vacuum leak, however, I've replaced just about all of my vacuum lines. You cant buy the factory hard plastic tubing, so I fabricated my own out of aluminum tubing and a cheap tubing bender. The aluminum tubing is readily available from hobby stores and is fairly inexpensive. Hope this helps you out. I cant find anymore vacuum leaks on mine, but it still fluctuates. Jon

How can you tell if egr is bad?

If you are talking about the EGR valve, then take a piece of rubber tubing and plug it onto the EGR valve vacuum port and using your mouth pull a suction on the tube. The valve should actuate (pull in) and if you hold it with your tongue by stopping up the end of the tubing, it should also hold it's vacuum. If it loses it's vacuum or doesn't actuate it is bad.
