Set up a vacuum flask with flexible intake tubing long enough to reach the mercury spill. Use glass tubing on the inside of the flask to reach nearly to the bottom on the intake side. On the other side (the side connected to the vacuum source) make sure the glass tubing reaches just inside the flask, near the top, so that the mercury entering the flask will not simply be sucked into the vacuum source lines. Use a two-holed rubber stopper to accomplish all this. This will give you a mercury vacuum cleaner, so to speak. Use a regulator and be careful to use just enogh vacuum to lift the mercury into the flask.

I am having a similar problem with my 95' w/351. Mine fluctuates by about 300 rpm's and is fairly consistant every 3-5 seconds. I've been told that it is a vacuum leak, however, I've replaced just about all of my vacuum lines. You cant buy the factory hard plastic tubing, so I fabricated my own out of aluminum tubing and a cheap tubing bender. The aluminum tubing is readily available from hobby stores and is fairly inexpensive. Hope this helps you out. I cant find anymore vacuum leaks on mine, but it still fluctuates. Jon
How can you tell if egr is bad?
If you are talking about the EGR valve, then take a piece of rubber tubing and plug it onto the EGR valve vacuum port and using your mouth pull a suction on the tube. The valve should actuate (pull in) and if you hold it with your tongue by stopping up the end of the tubing, it should also hold it's vacuum. If it loses it's vacuum or doesn't actuate it is bad.
