The KKK was founded as a response to the effects of Reconstruction on Southern society. The original purpose was to protect the Southern population against the very restrictive laws put in place by the U.S. and the resulting influx of persons trying to take advantage of the defeated Confederacy. As with most actions with good intentions the whole movement was taken over by a darker cause bought on by continued oppression bought on by Reconstruction lasting until WWII. All main line Southern Heritage groups condemn the KKK as well as all other hate groups such as the Black Panthers.
