For the same reason that Jerusalem is holy in Judaism. Most, if not all, religions have one or more holy places. (e.g.- Hinduism - Tirupati, Sikh - The Golden Temple,

Islam - Mecca, Judaism - Jerusalem, Christianity - Jerusalem, Buddhism - Bodhisvatta, Shintoism - Ise Grand Shrine, etc.). These are just examples of one important place for each religion, for example, Jerusalem is important in Islam as well and, depending on what Buddhism, certain temples in Nepal are important.

Explain the black box that Muslims worship?

Muslims only worship the one and only God, Allah, and do not worship anything else, including a black box. The 'black box' that you are referring to is properly called the ka'bah, and is believed by Muslims to have been built by Adam originally and then rebuilt by Abraham. It is considered to be the most sacred place of worship in Islam. Muslims do circumambulate the ka'bah and do face it during prayer, however Muslims DO NOT worship the ka'bah itself. To say that would be as absurd as saying that Christians who go to Church worship the Church itself or Jews who go to the synagogue worship the synagogue itself. The ka'bah is merely symbolic and is considered to be the 'house of Allah' hence Muslims face it during prayer, but actually worship only Allah.
