The US/Coalition is hunting for terrorists and any accompanying insurgents. The US entered Afghanistan in about October 2001, one month after the US was attacked in New York on September 11, 2001 by terrorists. Intelligence indicated that that region was a good place to begin the hunt for terrorists. Terrorist or criminal or insurgent (same crimes different titles) groups within the region consist of possibly dozens of different factions. Religious factions are (since the communists have fallen & the cold war ended in 1990) by far the favorite group to hide in now. Other's besides religious groups, are either dissidents of any governmental control, or members of old townships (tribes) that are carrying out old grudges (feuds), again hiding behind the time proven religious causes. But the US is NOT at war with the nation of Afghanistan. NO NATIONS are at war in areas involving US military forces. Law, Order, and Stability; and capturing or killing terrorists, all falling under the title of Law Enforcement...it's called, "The Global War on Terrorism."
