I am not sure that it is more common. The large welding rigs that are mounted on trucks mostly use DC, but they can be set for AC. If the question is based on a survey of the cheap welders at a retail outlet, the answer would be that AC welders are simpler to make, since only a transformer is required to change the voltage. A DC welder needs to convert the power from AC to DC, which is more complicated and therefore more expensive. Cheap welders may be easier to sell to a beginner, therefore more of the welders would be AC.
There are far more than 5 types or processes of welding. Currently the American Welding Society (AWS) states that there are more than 80 different welding and joining processes. However, some of the common welding processes include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), and oxyfuel gas welding (OFW).
Actually I usually crowd the puddle when welding vertical up. The longer the arc length the more the arc can wander.
Using the correct procedures and filler material they can both have the same strength. P.S. both are considered "arc welding"
The 'arc' in arc welding is not an acronym but in turn is a reference to the electric arc that is being generated during the welding process.
If you are asking for the correct nomenclature it is Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
Almost all welding today is done with electricity (Arc Welding) even on cast iron. SMAW, GTAW, GMAW etc. --AW means Arc Welding.

Yes, arc welding does create ozone. It is because the temperatures created during arc welding convert the nearby oxygen to ozone.
The arc utilized for arc welding is low voltage high current discharge. The voltage required for maintaining an arc is less than for striking the arc. Voltage drops & current increases as the arc is developed. The voltage required to strike DC arc is about 50-55 V & for AC is 80-90 V.It is difficult to maintain the arc with voltage less than 14V or more than 40V.READ ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY BY B L THAREJA / AK THAREJA
