It was called the Great War because no war had ever been as large. Troops from as far away as New Zealand, Australia and India served. It was truly the first ever "world war". When Hitler invaded Poland and began another world war, the "Great War" became known as the "First World War" or "World War One".

Another reason why it was "great" was because most soldiers went away to war with romantic notions of becoming heroes.
