Is there a priest at a Holy Communion service?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe only times that a Catholic Church would have a Communion service would be if a priest were not available. In my diocese the rules are that a parish may have a Communion service on one Sunday out of the year if it is impossible to get a priest. The Vatican forbids Communion services during the week, and on a regular basis. There had to have been a priest there before the Communion service to consecrate the Sacred Hosts.

What churches do not take holy communion?

Catholics do not TAKE Holy Communion, they may only RECEIVE it from a priest or a licensed Eucharistic Minister.

What is the role of a priest in a Catholic Church?

The most important role of the priest is to perform mass. Without a priest, we could have no communion. A deacon can do almost everything else a priest can do, but only a priest (or higher) may perform transubstantiation (the miracle of turning bread into the body of Christ).

How much bread is eaten at a holy communion?

The eating of the bread is symbolic and as such only a small piece is given to the participants.

Can you take bread and wine at mass if you have not made your First Holy Communion?

.Catholic AnswerAfter the consecration (the prayer the priest says at the altar) there is no more bread and wine. All of it is entirely changed (a process known as transubstantiation) into the Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. You may only receive Our Blessed Lord in Holy Communion after you are old enough to recognize the difference between bread and wine and Our Blessed Lord's Body and Blood. When you are old enough to know the difference, then you must make your first Confession, and first Holy Communion. And then you receive it, you never take it. Only protestants "take" Communion. Catholics "receive" Holy Communion - there is a HUGE difference.

Who hands out the holy bread at mass?

the priest can only hands out the consecrated bread at mass.

Does a Catholic have to confess to a priest before communion?

If a Catholic has committed a mortal sin, then he must confess this sin to a priest in the Sacrament of Confession before he can receive Communion. If he has committed only venial sins, then he is free to receive Communion without going to Confession, and his reception of Communion will actually result in the forgiveness of those venial sins.

What is the difference between a vicar and priest?

A priest (Refereing to a Catholic) does mass as transfiguration / communion as transubstation and a vicar does a service in rememberance only. If i was you, i would go for option one , it is a true mass.

Why do people form an x with their arms to not receive Catholic communion?

Traditionally only communicants (those receiving communion) should process and present themselves to the Priest or Eucharistic Minister. Sometimes those not eligible to receive communion process and they cross their arms to signify that they should not be offered communion. If a priest is distributing communion they may say a quick blessing on the person. This started when parents did not want to leave young children in the pews and so brought them forward. Most churches prefer that only communicants process as this speeds up communion.

Why do Catholic priests not offer wine to members of their church during communion?

First some backgroundCommunion is typically offered in two species: "bread" and "wine" or the body and blood of Christ. The doctrine behind communion states that receiving communion in one species as equivalent to receiving it in the other or both species. I.e. you are not better off if you only receive it one way. God is present in whichever species you are offered. And it is a personal choice to take one species or the other or both.At mass the priest consecrates both bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ at the alter. In most churches around the world the priest consecrates sufficient quantities of wine and bread to serve to population attending mass.Your question could imply two situations. 1 Why does the Priest normally give out the bread while someone else is distributing the wine; or 2 Why is the wine not offered to the public?1 Why does the Priest give out the bread, while someone else gives out the wine?Theologically there is no reason for this, although there is longstanding precedent for this. One species or the other is not more holy or more important, so the Priest could choose to serve whichever species he wants. I suspect that as all communicants take the bread and only a subset take the wine, the Priest endeavors to serve the people by giving them the most common species.2 Why is communion only offered in one species? That said, individual priests, parishes, or diocese sometimes decide to only offer only one species and that is normally the bread. The reasons for this are many. The recent H1N1 swine flu has some concerned about spreading these germs via the cup so this species has been reserved only for the priest in many parishes. Another reason is that wine (even table wine) is alcoholic and some have decided that restricting this is in the best interests of the community. Another reason is logistical, managing so many Eucharistic ministers (those who help distribute communion) is difficult (my church which provides communion in both species requires 14 helpers to serve an average mass size of 600)-when you multiply that by the number of masses each week, you realize that a parish may need almost a hundred Eucharistic ministers on the rosters.
