Why is keeping one's mother tongue important?

Because mothers are incapable of keeping their tongues for themselves. Everybody has a mother, and everybody has come to know how easily a mother can embarrass their children. If you do not keep your mothers tongue she will surely use it against you.

Oh, o.k., all right. Probably not the answer you were looking for. It is not so clear the importance of keeping the language of your mothers and fathers. Both my parents speak Latin and this tongue I could do with out. But then again, because I know a little Latin, I spend far less time perusing dictionaries for the meaning of words than if I didn't know any Latin at all. Learning as many languages as one can possibly stand to learn is probably a good idea. Learning better ways to communicate, even if it is only in the single language you speak is an even better idea. Learning how to understand the body language of others, learning how to interpret their tone is probably a good idea. Learning to show compassion regardless of the flailing arms and angry tone is even better.
