It is not really a nickname:

In 1781, a group of 44 settlers founded a town named "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula," ("The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the River Porciúncula"). We now know it simply as Los Angeles.

Cith of Los Angeles means City of the Angels
