Quran is God revelation to prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel. The Quran is the real God words (without a single letter alterations) with the same Arabic language that is still a live language. That is why Quran is different than other holy books. The texts of other holy books are not real God words but translations of the meanings of God words with alterations and additions made effective by many human contributors.

That is why memorizing Quran means memorizing God words.

In addition, Quran includes all morals and guides for a Muslim to lead a good life that meets God commands and in the same help a Muslim to maintain good characters and to do good deeds for his society.

Memorizing Quran also is an important factor that ensured having Quran without a single letter change since start of Quran revelation until the moment and will remain without single letter change, by god will, until the Day of Judgment.

We see most Muslims know the Koran by heart or at least most of it because they greatly love and connect to it, in it they also find truthfulness, honesty, orders and legislation which help them to overcome the problems and difficulties of this life. They memorize it so that it can be easier for them to fulfill its orders and follow its guidance and legislation. Whoever can't memorize the whole of the Koran due to his being busy or any other reason he tries to memorize as much as he can. They are aware not to do anything against the orders of the Koran, so they do their best to memorize it to be alive in their minds when doing any work either for this life or for the hereafter or for God's sake.

Actually, most Muslims only memorize small sections of the Qur'an, less than 10% (these are the most meaningful or useful verses). It is only individuals who have dedicated themselves to memorizing large amounts that are considered Hafiths or Preservers, which is part of Arab oral tradition.
