There are many possibilities. If you're lucky it's a very simple issue suck as being low on coolant or there is debris blocking the radiator (such as a plastic bag or tree leaves). Other possibilities include a failed/stuck thermostat, broken cooling fan(s), or an old clogged/corroded radiator which would require replacement.
What else can you tell us about your overheating? Does it happen only when idling in traffic? At highway speeds? Is the car leaking coolant?
