If by any chance you are referring to the " BRAKE " light in your dash
That comes on to indicate ( 2 different things )
Either your emergency brake is on or the BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IS LOW in
the brake master cylinder located in the engine compartment
it may need some brake fluid

The running lights will turn off when the emergency brake is on by tripping a switch connected to the emergency brake. Pushing in the emergency brake slightly will do the trick, but make sure you don't push in too far or you will be driving with the emergency brake on!
Frozen cable not fully releasing? Bad switch at top of emergency brake pedal? Low brake fluid level in master cylinder?

I take it out of park and put it in gear first and then release the emergency brake

It can wear out your rear brakes prematurely if you do it for a long distance because the emergency brake pedal/handle just applies constant pressure on the rear brakes as if you were putting your foot on the brake pedal. It also kills your gas mileage.
If you are driving down the road and your brakes do not respond first try slowly applying the emergency brake to bring yourself to a complete stop and get your car serviced before driving again if the emergency brake also fails put the car into neutral and turn the engin off and try and coast to a safe complete stop and as earlier stated service vehicle before driving again
