Why is my fuel gauge in my 96 grand chreokee laredo keep going from empty to full?

I am in the process of fixing my fuel gauge problem now. I took the fuel pump out of the tank. at the top of the float arm there is a memory stick much like the sim card you install in your cell phone. it has many copper lines running through it (looks like the gas gauge) and the read needle on your float arm gives the reading of how full the tank is. the needle on the float arm seems to rock back and forth or side to side which over time pulls the needle which is spring loaded (no actual spring, but by the bend in the metal) away from the chart or sim card. you can try very very gently to put the spring back in the needle by inserting a small regular screwdriver or equivalent behind it and try and get the needle to make contact with the sim card again. if successful your fuel gauge should work properly again and you save a couple of hundred bucks.

MAP sensor going bad will cause that exact symptom, try unplugging the MAP sensor, if the vehicle will run with it unplugged then you know the MAP sensor is bad. My 88 Dodge Aries did the exact same thing.

The coolant stops pumping through the block and heads once the engine is shut down. The block and heads are still hot so the coolant in the block and heads temporarily gets hotter.
Can you make a fusible link from the alternator to the starter?
A fusable link is exactly like the old fashioned household fuse. You make a fusabling link by cutting the wire and inserting a small length of wire 2 wire sizes smaller (I believe its two, don't quote me.) So if the wire is 12 gauge, put in a small length of 14 gauge. (A 14 gauge wire is small than 12 gauge) Make sure you use stranded insulated wire that is meant for cars and that you use the mechanical connectors with insulation built onto them (usually blue) that you attach to the wire by using a crimping tool. I think the length of the fuse should be about 1 inch to about 1.5 inches. Wrap it with plenty of black electrician's tape. If the fuse does burn out (which you want it to if there is too much current going through the wire) the black tape will protect the wire from shorting out to the body of the car, which cause you real problems.
Why would the rpm gauge not work when all the other electrical gauges are fine?
Because like all the other guages, each work independently of one another, and show different happenings going on with the engine. The tach itself could be bad, or maybe disconnected from the ignition system. You will need to find someone to troubleshoot it, if you want it fixed. If not, don't worry about it.

Most likely the cables in the regulator have tied into a knot in t6he gear housing. You will have to replace the regulator assy.
