Aeromonas bacteria have invaded the internal organs of the goldfish causing the belly to turn red. The fish needs to see a piscine vet A.S.A.P. or it will die. The vet will administer anitibacterial injections that may save the fish. Also if you have any other fish living with the affected fish you will need to have them treated too.

∙ 14y agoThere are some varieties of Goldfish that have been bred to be as you describe but if you have a standard goldfish and it is bloated then I would advise doing a 50% water change and then adding 1 level teaspoonfull of Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) per 2 gallons of water to its tank. This dose will steadily be diluted with the regular weekly 50% water changes you should be doing. If the fishes scales are sticking out like a file or rasp it has an incureable disease called Dropsy. If that is the case, then I would advise euthanasia and a complete strip down and scrub of the tank the fish was in before keeping fish in it again.

∙ 14y agoYou could try adding 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4)per gallon (2.25ltrs)of water. It should act as a laxative and free the fishes bowel up. If the fish only looks bloated because its scales are sticking out, the medication will be useless. The fish has a fatal disease called Dropsy and should be euthanised ASAP.
