Power Steering fluid leaks are most commonly caused by either a damaged or worn hose or faulty seals and/or bearings. Understand that during operation, one of the power steering hoses may be containing quite a bit of hydraulic pressure, and even a very small leak can result in quite a bit of fluid. If a power steering pump bearing is worn it can cause excessive strain on the seal and the pump shaft seal will fail. If the rack & pinion or steering gear (whichever your vehicle uses) shaft is worn or even if the seal is just old and tired, you can have quite a bit of leakage at the steering gear or rack. In any case, mechanical things all fail eventually, and your car is certainly a mechanical thing.

Can transmission fluid be used instead of power steering fluid?

Transmission fluid should not be used in place of power steering fluid. Power steering fluid is less compressible so that it can transfer power to different systems. Transmission fluid is meant for lubrication and has higher dimulsibility than power steering fluid.
