Purple is the normal colour of your experience bar. Each time you kill an enemy or hand in a quest it fills with exp.
If you log out, or visit a major city you will gain "rested" exp which is blue. The longer you are resting the higher it goes, up to a maximum of two lvles. This will turn your exp bar blue.
Rested exp doubles the exp you get from killing enimies but not quests so it levels you twice as fast while killing. You need to be logged out for up to several days in order to fill up levels worth though.
It is basically a catch up to your friends method.
Please see the related links section for a listing of purplish drakes in World of Warcraft.
