Its not ironic but tragic.

As a German he did his duty and fought as a Lieutenant in the First World War in the Imperial German Army.

He then saw his country turn from the path of democracy, vote in a xenophobic despot who, during the course of his evil Dictatorship destroyed whole communities and murdered millions of people on the basis of race, colour, religion and political belief and started WWII.

As a Jew, Frank and his family fell foul of the Nazis' hatred of Jews and the Judenpogrome (Jewish pogroms) In 1940, after he failed to get visas for his family to America, he went with his wife and daughters Anne and Margot, into hiding for two years in Amsterdam before being betrayed by an anonymous informant in August 1944.

They were deported to the infamous Auschwitz death camp, from which only Frank survived.
