There is nothing in the gospel that is better designed to keep the attention of men centered on God, on righteousness, and on their duties than is prayer. Every thought, word, and act is influenced or governed by the nature and extent of one's communion through prayer with Diety. "Watch and pray always, lest ye enter into temptation". Matt. 26:41. == It gives hope to the hopeless. Prayer gives hope, yes, but it also can be a great help when you are depressed and frustrated, as God hears and answers.
From a Christian perspective prayer is useful because of the person to whom one is praying. God has promised not only to hear but to answer prayers. I have experienced this numerous times over 35 years, and it cannot be wishful thinking or self-hypnosis because many circumstances are outside of one's control and answers often come contrary to expectations and particularly when I have given up and tried to solve the problem myself.
Prayer would be useless if either the person to whom one is praying was indifferent or did not have the power to help, neither is the case with God. He is both willing and compassionate and able and also wise above my limited understanding - a fact for which I am often thankful.
Many would point to prayer as being only of psychological 'encouragement' value. While prayer may in the short term do this for some, it is ultimately futile, like the entire Christian faith, if there is no one there. So even if a person has great faith in a non-existent deity, they will ultimately be left high and dry. Thankfully this is not the case, as thousands of Christians can testify, 'I know Him whom I have believed.'
