The most common reason for "smoky" urine is slight dehydration. The second most common reason is urinary tract infection (UTI).

When a person is well hydrated and has no illness, urine should be a clear yellow to light amber in color. You should easily be able to see the bottom of the toilet bowl through the urine or to mentally be able to read newsprint when it is at the bottom of the toilet bowl.

NOTE! The analogy about newspaper print does NOT mean anyone should put a newspaper page in the toilet. Instead, it is an analogy to explain just how clear urine should be-- i.e. that you could read words through the urine if it is clear yellow.
