Why is social responsibility relevant in production management?

Social responsibility comes into play in production management many times. Fair and equal treatment of the employees, provision of a safe workplace, following the accepted practices for obtaining raw material, part and supplies are just some areas. Shortcuts by production management can lead to unsafe working conditions, unsafe conditions endangering the environment or the neighboring community (Bopal, India, Love Canal). Lack of social responsibility can mean leaving future tenants to clean up dumped chemicals and other hazards. Social responsibility requires that the production be accomplished in a safe, legal manner. Many times businesses have lobbied to have laws written for that they can comply with the letter of the law but still not be acting in a socially acceptable manner (for example, coal miners and black lung).
