Because when they move, the energy they get from food is being wasted as opposed to going into the meat or milk etc that we want. The more an animal moves, the more nutrients need to go into it's food to make up for the wasted energy. This doesn't make keeping animals in cruel conditions anymore acceptable.

What items transforms 100 percent of the energy it receives into useful energy?

Nothing or anything that converts energy is 100% efficient because as one form of energy is converted into another form, some energy is lost in that of heat, sound or other factors. The most efficient form of energy is the fuel cell as it converts chemical energy in electrical energy directly but still it's not 100% efficient. A2. I think that an electric convector heater would be 100% efficient, as it has no moving parts to lose energy through friction, all the electric energy absorbed in the device is emitted as thermal energy.

Why is the flow of energy through an ecosystem considered inefficient?

The transfer of energy and matter in a food chain is only 10% efficient because 90% doesn't get broken down or used while moving through the food chain.
