It is no longer important in the way that the Amendment once meant.... to protect a state which had no formal army, and which was only newly independent. The possibility that the British might come back was a thought at the back of the mind when that Amendment was enacted - but now that there is a proper army, the "militia' mentioned is not required, and doesn't exist anyway.
Think back to when this country was founded; man needed to have the right to defend his property, his family and himself from those that would think they could just step in and help themselves to whatever they wanted. It was an uncivilized land there wasn't really and way to seek justice or call for help - you had to be your own help.
We need the right to bear arms because first of all it is our right to defend ourselves against intruders. also many people hunt for food. by the way owning machine guns that street gang wars are fought with is illegal.
if you don't have weapons, what happens if you have to protect your self in an emergency?

Perhaps the question really should be: IS the right to bear arms important. Some countries do not have the same approach as in the US to the idea of the general populace bearing arms. It is a provision put into the US Constitution by the founders. For this reason alone it is very important, and would require a constitutional amendment to change or eliminate. There is some debate about what the provision actually means. Many hold that it describes the right of any private individual to keep and bear arms. Others argue that the provision's intent was to insure the existence of a private militia and has nothing to do with gun ownership by private individuals. I am in favor of the private ownership of guns, but I am not against background checks, or even minimum training in order to possess certain weapons.
because some people feel they need to defend themselves against other people or in they don't have a gun they wont be save
They wanted to be able to protect themselves and form a militia if necessary.
right to bear arms
The 2nd amendment is the right to bear arms. Which means we have the right to own firearms. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the Security of a free State, the right of the people To keep and bear Arms , as all not be infringed.
The second amendment permits citizens the right to have and to bear arms. It was made at a time when we were a number of colonies and the countries that sent people to here didn't want the colonist to have arms.
