Answer: If the question were "Why is Jesus important to Christians today?" or "Why is Mohammed important to Islam today?" the obvious answer is that they started the religion and were a divine indicator that it is the right religion. In Buddhism the figure of the historic Buddha reminds us that any person can, by themselves, escape the cycle of death and re-birth and become enlightened.
