Well, the first reason the American Civil War was unforgettable was that it was a civil war that tore the nation into two. The second reason was due to the high amount of casualties in every conflict due to (relatively) advanced weaponry combined with outdated tactics. As many Americans died in the Battle of Gettysburg (three days) as in Vietnam (many years). Finally, the war ended slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment.
