It established, once and for all, that the Parliament, representing the people of the country, was the ulimate authority in the country. They even had the power, by law, to depose the king and alter the succession. Any king who failed to reign according to the constitution and with the consent of parliament could be deposed. The significance of the American Revolution is simply the birth of the American independent state, aka the USA. It was also a challenge to the old monarchies and heritage-based privelage hierarchies of the old systems in Europe. To be sure, many of the same privelages based on family origins could be seen in America, but all of those privelages were constantly renewed by the general public again and again come election year. If, in the rare event the public deemed a certain candidate unworthy, or if a better one presented himself, that candidate could be voted down and then the line would end and a new one would begin. It was a government by the people because it was for the people, which was an idea, long to take root across the Atlantic.
