Of course, being backwards is a point of view - however.... The Qur'an, like The Bible, is largely open to interpretation, so therefore there will be a large mixture of people in this community with different points of view. Remember, the Christian community used to be this backwards as well. But this was a long time ago. Right now, much of the Muslim religion is still intertwined with their politics and daily life. The Christian community used to be this way. However, in the late 1700's the French beheaded their God-appointed monarch (divine right of kings), Louis XVI, and to me, this ended the trend of Christianity being involved in European politics and even their way of life. This spread throughout Europe eventually. Look at how much Christianity affects the day to day life of most Europeans and North Americans - hardly not at all. When the question of right and wrong comes up, these countries usually have a lists of rights and freedoms, often closely resembling the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" from the United Nations. When moral questions come up, western government don't open up the bible, they look at their own man-made laws. Until you see the Muslim nations and community make this shift in their culture and society, this view of backwardness will always prevail.
In most cases, religiously fanatical societies can always be viewed as backwards and/ or illogical. The very premise that a God exists take a large amount of logical abhorrence to acknowledge. For example:
God is supposed omnipotent (all powerful) according to the Koran, Bible, etc.
If God is omnipotent, then he should be able to create a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it.
If God cannot lift the rock, then he is no omnipotent.
If he can lift the rock, then he is not omnipotent because he cannot make a rock he cannot lift.
If he cannot make a rock he cannot lift, then he is not omnipotent as well.
So, of course someone who believes that something can be omnipotent is backwards; if you are not thinking straight forward and logically, then you must be thinking backwards.
