Answer 1

It is a holy city to both cultures and religions.

The Palestinians are dispossessed and the Israelis only gained their own lands after suffering thousands of years of persecution culminating in 6 million deaths in Nazi Germany.

Both have a claim - and both have been hard done by.

What city do both Israelis and Palestinians claim to be their capital?

Yes, they do. See the related question on why that might be.

What important religious sites are being contested by the Israelis and Palestinians?

There are quite a number of such sites, but the most famous is the Temple-Mount/Noble-Sanctuary area in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is the holiest site in the world to Jews and the third holiest site in the world to Muslims.

What areas are a source of conflict between Palestinians and Israelis?

The areas of conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians are the entire former Mandate of British Palestine which includes Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. The strongest sources of conflict are in the latter two regions and the city of Jerusalem which is partially in Israel and partially in the West Bank according to International Law.

What did the new peace plan in 2003 call for Israel and the Palestinians to do?

There are two different important peace plans proposed in 2003. If this is asking about the Geneva Initiative of 2003, it requested for Israelis and Palestinians to return to the 1949 borders with some minor landswaps and a divided Jerusalem. However, the peace plan is much more complicated than that, so please read the Related Link which discusses the peace plan. If this is asking about the Saudi Peace Initiative of 2003, it requested for Israelis and Palestinians to return to the 1949 borders exactly as they were on that date (which is deeply troubling to Israelis especially as concerns Jewish sites in the Old City of Jerusalem) and resettlement of all Palestinians who wish to return to Israel in Israel. In return, the Palestinians are not required to do anything, but all Islamic States will recognize the new Palestinian-majority state of Israel.

Is Jerusalem part of the British empire?

No. Jerusalem is the capital city of Israel which is an indepedent sovereign state (country). Israel was a British protectorate from the end of WWI until 1948. The Israelis recognize the importance of Jerusalem in the Christian and Islamic traditions and they maintain access to the Holy Land and the holy sites for all visitors. Given the tension between Israel and her Islamic neighbours, the Israelis have been very generous in their treatment of the Palestinians, but the Palestinians have been encouraged by other Muslim states to reject co-operation with the Israelis. It is sad because the Palestinians would do much better by accepting Israeli help. It is interesting that the only military campaigns against Israel were waged by the Egyptians who are not Arabs at all.

Will Israel have access to Jerusalem?

Israel has had access to all of Jerusalem ever since June 7, 1967, when Israeli paratroopers took the Old City of Jerusalem. I can envision no situation where Israel would give up the right to access Jerusalem, even though the Taba Summit Agreement (which was not singed) in 2000 proposed giving East Jerusalem and most of the Old City to the Palestinian Authority, but even that would have required the Palestinians to give Israelis the right to access the city.

Do Arabs and Israelis consider Jerusalem to be a holy place?

Yes. The three monotheistic religions (of which Arabs and Israelis are mainly composed) all venerate the city.

What is the main religion of Israelis and Palestinians?

There are actually three main religions in Israel. This, of course, is Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem is also considered a holy city for all three faiths. While differences between the Jews and Palestinians linger on, they all worship the same God. This, of course, is the one God who has several names. The latter includes Ilahi, Allah, and Jehovah.

What were the difficulties the Jews had living in Israel?

The Jews STILL live there, and they still have difficulties. The biggest problem is the situation with the Palestinian Territories. The Israelis require the Palestinians to recognize them as a state in order to gain independence, but the Palestinians refuse. On the Other hand, The Palestinians, want full control over the old city of Jerusalem, and the Israelis refuse. The Palestinian Authority has repeatedly stated that it will not recognize or deal with Israel. But another complication there is that all of the power, water, and cell phone service in the Territories come from Israel. In order for Israel to give complete independence, it would have to stop supplying the Palestinians with electricity and water, which they just can't do.

What city is a hotly contested issue between the people of israel and the Palestinians?

What are the two most important towns in Christianity?

The first most important town in Christianity is Bethlehem, where Christ was born. The second most important town of Christianity is Jerusalem since it is the town that Christ was crucified. Today Jerusalem is the capital city of the State of Israel. Jerusalem is the cradle of three religions and a Holy city for Judaism [Temple of Solomon], Christianity [Church of Resurrection] and Islam [Temple of Omar]. The old town of Jerusalem, where the three Temples are, is governed by the Palestinians.

The Dome of the Rock is in the Old City of Jerusalem, which forms part of East Jerusalem. This is a disputed area between Israel, which administers and claims the city and the Palestinians who see it as part of their capital and part of Palestinian Territory.
