I have never heard of Rome' location being improbable geographically and I do not quite get what this would mean.
Rome's location was very favourable. it had several neighbouring hills. Ancient people liked living on hills because they were easy to defend from raids which were common then. Rome was formed by the coming together of the peoples of these hills under a unified state and a single ruler (king). The supply of water was good. The area was rich in volcanic rock (tuff) which offered good building material. Rome was also by the only Ford on the river Tiber, making it the main north-south crossing in the area and an important trading centre. The Tiber also allowed overseas navigation and a port was built on the river in the early days.
The area of the mentioned hills was already settled in the 11th century BC, long before the date of its foundation (853 BC) and Archaeology has shown that it belonged to the Latial (Latin) culture.
