It's painful for the sheep. Sorry, but I think you are getting mixed-up with MULESING (which IS painful to the sheep, and should be banned!!) Crutching, (which is just the SHAVING of dirty wool around the bottom area of the sheep's rear end) is no more painful than you or I getting a hair-cut. CRUTCHING is a necessity to prevent blowflies from laying their eggs on the sheep which will hatch into maggots and eat the sheep's flesh causing septicemia and eventually death! Crutching has to be done 2-3 times a year, (depending on your weather conditions). The reason farmer's do MULESING is to not ever have to do crutching.
Julie!!
It would depend on which country your sheep farm is located and the type of sheep you have. Common problems found on sheep farms are worms, lice, flystrike, pink eye. Feed problems in drought times. And the difficulty in finding shearers at crutching or shearing time.
When breeding a sheep that is producing a high amount of wool most farmers will shear the hind end of the ewe (called crutching), just enough for the vulva opening to be easily accessed. Sheep are shorn annually, so it depends of the time of joining and shearing as to how much wool the sheep will actually have in that area. Also farmers are breeding sheep to have less wool in the breech area so that there is a lower risk of fly strike.
