The commandments are sort of "guidelines," on how to live your life in moral way. Basically, they sort of tell you "how to be a good person," in the views of the church. For example, the christian church believes that it's important to follow the commandments in order to live in a way god intended.

Try to imagine "no one stealing anything around the world." I know, we can't... but:
Imagine, if you can, the "cost savings" at the store if "tamper proof" packaging and "anti-theft" measures and devices weren't needed.
Try to imagine all the insurance companies going out of business... and not needing insurance.
Imagine not having locks on anything [your house or car]... and "no keys" to remember or lug around.
"Not stealing," of course, precludes "lust" [coveting; the satisfying of the five physical senses]... which is the cause of the breaking of all the other Commandments. So murders, lying, adultery and disrespect of others would cease, also.
Imagine no "police departments"... or military establishments.
Try to imagine a world at "peace" -- a world where you feel "safe."
The absence of theft would make some radical changes [for the better] throughout the world. I think some people call it the unimaginable "perfect world."

∙ 9y agoIt depends on which 5th commandment you mean; in some traditions it's "Thou shalt not kill" (in Judaism it's often interpreted as "Don't commit murder") in others it's "Thou must honour thy father and thy mother".
Not killing is a widespread belief - although some scholars believe that in Judaism the 10 commandments only "counted" for the Israelites - so if an Israelite killed, claiming the victim was a non-Israelite would have been a defence.

∙ 12y agoThe prohibition against adultery is one of the major enablers of civil interpersonal relationships. If adultery was unlimited, social gatherings of any kind would be impossible, as every man would be a likely adulterer (instead of just a possible one). Murders would double and triple.
