It is a siren.
Starbucks use the mermaid as their logo - although Starbucks actually officially call it by it's proper name - a Siren, not a mermaid.
It's a reference to Baubo who shamelessly jested with Demeter to cheer her while she mourned her daughter, but what is commonly called the "Baubo siren" refers to the logo of Starbucks coffee.
The Starbucks franchise has had a total of 4 logos since the company first opened. The original logo was designed in 2006 by Terry Heckler and was an image of a twin tailed mermaid that was topless.
There is a long, involved history of how the logo was developed. Yes, the Starbucks coffee logo is inspired by the character Starbuck from Moby Dick. The logo features a twin-tailed siren or mermaid, which was chosen to represent the company's nautical theme and tie back to the seafaring roots of the character Starbuck.
The founders of Starbucks took the name Starbucks from a character in Melville's Moby Dick, who was the captains First Mate. They added another reference to the sea; the siren - a mythical creature who it was believed lured unsuspecting sailors to their watery deaths - is depicted on the Starbucks logo.
Do you mean the logo? Because the Starbucks logo was based on the charicter "Starbucks" from the book Mobie Dick. They recently changed the logo though.
The starbuck's logo has changed over the years. The logo has always been a picture of a mermaid, and the newer the year of the logo the less mermaid is shown. The original logo featured a whole mermaid, today there logo features only the head of the mermaid.
