It is a species of Giant tortoise. There is only one known Pinta tortoise left in exsistense, he is known as 'lonley george', he weighs approximately 90 kilograms and measures over 100 centimeters across his carapace. His exact age is unknown, but is predicted to be between 60 and 90 years. When "Lonesome George" eventually dies, his species will probably end with him. He will join the other species of giant tortoises that have become extinct in Galapagos.

∙ 11y agoDecades ago, it was thought that the Pinta Island tortoise was extinct already. Early settlers in the Galapagos Islands introduced farmed animals, such as goats and pigs, resulting in the destruction of the Islands' wildlife and insufficient food supply for the indigenous animals. Hunting, especially for exotic food such as the Island's tortoises, also had a large impact on damaging the wildlife. It was only in 1971 that the existence of Lonesome George was confirmed when József Vágvölgyi, a Hungarian malacologist who specialized in mollusks saw the creature. Since its discovery, the tortoise has been moved to and protected in theCharles Darwin Research Station.

Early explorers decimated the population for food, and use the shells for carrying etc. According to the current Wikipedia entry on the species - The Pint Island Tortoise is now 'Extinct in the Wild' - meaning there are nowild-living specimens left. The only known specimen (named 'Lonesome George' inhabited the island until he was relocated 'for his own safety' to the Charles Darwin Research Station. Apparently, there is a large reward being offered to anyone who finds a suitable female. Assuming no mate has been found, when George eventually dies, the species will be officially extinct.
Yet another species wiped out by (allegedly) the most intelligent species on this planet - MAN !

If you're question refers to how many tortoises remained on Pinta Island in the Galapagos Archipelago, there is no exact answer. Because of the depletion of the population by whalers in the late 19th century, the subspecies known as the Pinta Tortoise was essentially considered extinct by the mid-twentieth century. Shortly thereafter, in the late 1950's, goats were introduced to the island which resulted in a terrible destruction of natural habitat. Renewed efforts to eradicate the goat population proved successful in the late 1990's and much of Pinta Island is being restored to it's natural state. As part of this, genetic testing is being done on tortoise populations on nearby islands to identify subspecies that are closely related to the original inhabitants and establish a new population on the island. The last know member of the original Pinta Tortoise subspecies, named Lonesome George, was discovered on the island in 1972 and lived in captivity until his death in 2012. During the last years of his life, all efforts to breed Lonesome George failed to produce any viable offspring.
