Why is the quote on the Martin Luther King Jr memorial being remove?

The "quote" is not a quote at all, rather the paraphrase of a quote from a sermon Dr. King gave about two months before he was assassinated. The text reads:
"I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."
While the sculptor, Lei Yixin, recommended scratching through the inscription rather than to try to replace it with the original words:
"Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."
One of the most outspoken supporters of the change, poet Maya Angelou, noted that the paraphrased quotation took King's words out of context and him sound arrogant. Dr. King was many things, but he was never arrogant. The King family, by the way, has supported the change and has been working with the National Parks Service to find a suitable solution.
