Southern Europe is mainly where Romance languages originate. Romance languages are derived from the language of the Roman Empire, Latin. The Roman Empire's heart was in Southern Europe (Now Rome, Italy) but quickly conquered all of the Mediterranean and even reaching north up to Great Britain. Romance languages were born in different areas around the Roman Empire and there are a five main Romance languages:

  • Italian
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Romanian
  • Portuguese

These languages originate from the country in which they are named and are all based off Latin, thus being a Romance language.

English is often mistaken for being a Romance language since it is so heavily related to French. In reality, English is a Germanic language as it was created from Scandinavian/Germanic tribes that migrated to the British Isles. When the French came along, their influence was being added to the language. So even though in reality English is basically French + Germanic languages, it is still classified as a Germanic language.

Germanic languages dominate Northern Europe (although Slavic languages are also present) while Romance languages dominate Southern Europe (although Slavic languages are too also present).
