∙ 13y agoActually, the speed of light is variable. Using diamonds and/or crystals, light-speed has been doubled as well as slowed to 30 mph.
That being said, the waves that make sound are longer that the waves that make light, so they travel through air more quickly. Not so with water...

Why you see a distant event before you hear it?
Because the speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. Therefore, when the light from that event reaches your eyes, you see it. Then later, the sound from the event reaches your ears, and you hear it. Basically it's just because light travels faster than sound.
