If it's Australian, British or Canadian, the "FD" is part of a longer Latin motto and is an abbreviation that stands for Defender of the Faith, one of the titles the monarch holds as head of the Church of England.

It seems to have first appeared on British gold and silver coins during the reign of George I in or about 1714.
