Before I can answer that question, can you describe where the ticking noise is coming from? Front of the vehicle? Rear? Engine? Is it coming from your Wheels?
If its coming from the front of the vehicle you might require an oil change. If its coming from the rear of the vehicle it could be your axle. If its coming from your wheels it could be either wheel bearings or a backing plate for your brakes. Does it happen at regular intervals? Are they random and sporadic?
what size thread is the oil switch sensor in a range rover 1994 4.2 v8
Let me guess it's a range rover 2.5 1994-2002 so it's a diesel sport edition
The ticking noise could be worn out rocker arms under valve covers. Switch to heavier weight oil if ticking noise subsides that could be your problem. This is usually a sign of a high mileage engine. Worst case scenario would be weak oil pump not getting oil to top of heads.

Ticking in an engine generally refers to the valves. If ticking is apparent on a 1994 Chevy Lumina tighten the valves to factory specifications.
have a 1994 land rover discovery & dont have owners manual. where i can i get one?
You can't. If is making a ticking noise you need new lifters. Cheap fix is to put in oil treatment for lifters and hope for the best.

The most common problem would be a valve lifter not pumping up. Of more concern would be the valve seat in the #4 cylinder going bad. Escorts have had this very common problem for years.

no, if anything it will get worse, synthetic oil has a lower viscosity than mineral oils (i.e it is runnier). but using a heavier oil is not always good for your car, i.e if you live in a very cold place, you want a very thin oil as the start up can be very taxing on an engine, but that wont affect your lifter noise. if it is indeed a lifter ticking, get it serviced, & get the lifters reset. it may simply be a noise that is normal for that car, some of them do & some of them dont.
