The part you are looking for is a blend motor. It is made of plastic . The gears teeth are broken or missing. This part moves a flap from normal cold air to the heated air. Only get heat when blend motor is engaged.
It's the blend door on the HVAC box. It's what controls what temp air comes through the vents.
That is the mix door actuator trying to move the door, it may be stuck or you might have a vacuum leak coming from the engine. The actuator may be bad as well.
DOES IT DO IT WHEN YOU RUN THE A/C ALSO? IS THE SOUND COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE BEHIND THE DASH? IF SO IT COULD BE THE BEARINGS GOING BAD IN THE FAN BLOWER MOTOR.
Heat and steam coming from the dash and air vents after replacing the water pump means that a hose is hooked up backwards in the new installation. The heater is actually taking on water when it is supposed to only take on hot air.
It has electrical energy going in, and it has light, sound and heat coming out.

Diverter is improperly engaging in the dash. Turn all dash switches off. Turn on truck, turn heater switch to max heat, then turn switch to vent. Feel any heat coming from dash? Now turn fan up a notch. You may hear the diver flap engage, and air gets cooler. Got drop dash to fix it
An irregular ticking that slows downs over time is probably a hot exhaust component (exhaust manifold heat shield, down pipe, catalytic converter, etc.) contracting as it cools off. This is normal if it stops after a few minutes.
My 2003 Ford Explorer and my heat does not work I turn it on but it only blows cold air. Also when I take it off cold to turn the heat up it's starts making a ticking sound like something is knocking? What is this problem? When I turn it back to the air, the ticking noise stops. This is the exact same thing on my 04 explorer, Does anyone have an answer? You need a Blend Door Actuator.. They are fairly cheap at Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. The hard part is getting to the blend door. You have to remove a section of your dash. The actuator is located on the drivers side where your right leg would be if you were sitting in the vehicle. I wouldn't pay to have it done. I just replaced mine. You just have to be patient and remove one bolt at a time until you reach it. hope this helps!
If the dash lights go on and off and the heat won't turn off and electrical noise is coming from the heater, there could be a short in the wiring on a 1998 Blazer. This is also possible if the ground wire for these items is not longer attached.
Front heater core is in the dash, the rear heater core is all the way in the back of the vehicle. If you have steam coming out of the dash vents, the front HC is leaking. If you have steam coming out of the rear heater vents, then the rear core is leaking.
