I think it depends on your male friend, it's all about attitude and personality he have. But I have some idea how you feel, feeling small, wondering if it is you who have a problem. There are some man who can easily make a conversation no matter the subject is. But there are some who don't or having a hard time communicating to some people or a friend itself. Why don't you talk to him next time the two of you hang out and tell him how bad you feel every time the two of you are together. Be blunt and don't hide this feelings from him because you deserve to know why.

At least his only your friend, mine was a bit different, I marry the man who also makes me feel small or not worthy of his conversation. you and I has the same question but different issue. He once told me that he is a quite man and hardly make conversation, so from that time on, I believed him, because after all he was my husband, he wouldn't lie to me right?
