Cylinder misfire, somthing causing too much fuel to be injected, such as a bad sensor. Check engine light should be on with this condition, unleass you had a recent no start problem that would keep adding fuel while your cranking.

Oil should have a certain petrochemical smell (be careful sniffing fumes, it's not particularly healthy) that may be similar to gas, but if there is gas in the oil in the vehicle, the oil may be very thin and watery. This is a serious problem. Gas does not have lubricating properties like oil and this could cause major engine damage. Get this checked out by a pro immediately. It could be just a seal failed or bad carburetor or bad injector. Have it fixed before it turns into seized pistons, etc.

It could be the fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel. If that engine is a CFI (central fuel injection), the fuel pressure regulator is located under the upper intake manifold and it can leak without being noticed.

While you have the upper intake off BE SURE to check all 8 of the black plastic fuels lines that come off of each injector and hook to the spray nozzles they can also leak fuel into the engine oil system. Like he said it will probley be the pressure regulator.
